Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi – Tsavo West National Park | Into the Volcanic Wilderness
Your Kenya adventure begins with a morning departure from Nairobi, driving southeast through changing landscapes toward Tsavo West National Park, Kenya’s oldest and one of its most dramatic reserves. The park’s volcanic terrain reveals ancient lava flows, rocky outcrops, and the famous red-dust elephants that have become Tsavo’s trademark.
Arrive in time for lunch at your lodge, then head out for your first afternoon game drive through a landscape unlike any other in Kenya. Visit the Shetani Lava Flow, a striking black river of volcanic rock, and Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear waters gush from underground springs and hippos can be viewed from an underwater observation chamber. Track lions, leopards, buffalo, and the park’s massive elephant herds across open plains beneath volcanic mountains.
Return to your lodge as the African sunset paints Tsavo’s dramatic landscape in shades of amber and rose. Dinner and your overnight stay deep in the wilderness — the sounds of the bush your only company.
Day 2: Tsavo West – Full Day Exploration
Spend the full day exploring Tsavo West’s 9,065 square kilometers of untamed wilderness. Early morning game drives offer the best predator viewing — lions, leopards, and cheetahs are most active in the cool hours. The park’s diverse habitats support over 600 bird species, making it a paradise for birding enthusiasts alongside traditional game viewing.
Optional visits include the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, home to critically endangered black rhinos, or scenic drives along the Tsavo River where crocodiles bask, and elephants come to drink. The park’s volcanic hills and acacia woodlands create dramatic backdrops for wildlife photography, while the thin vegetation makes game spotting easier than in denser parks.
Return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation before an afternoon game drive that extends into the golden hour, when the light turns magical, and animals gather at waterholes for their evening drink.
Day 3: Tsavo West – Amboseli National Park | Journey to Kilimanjaro
After breakfast, depart Tsavo West and drive to Amboseli National Park, home to Africa’s greatest elephant herds and the finest views of Mount Kilimanjaro anywhere on the continent. The approximately 4-hour journey crosses dramatic landscapes where Maasai herders tend their cattle beneath vast skies.
Arrive at Amboseli in time for lunch, then embark on your first game drive in this extraordinary park. Amboseli’s open plains and sparse vegetation create perfect visibility for wildlife encounters — massive elephant families move in slow procession across the plains, lions rest beneath acacia shade, and if the clouds part, Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped summit reveals itself in all its majesty.
Your afternoon drive positions you for Amboseli’s signature photograph: elephants silhouetted against Kilimanjaro’s perfect cone. Return to your lodge as the mountain glows pink in the fading light, one of Africa’s most breathtaking sunsets.
Day 4: Amboseli National Park | Full Day with the Amboseli Giants
Today is dedicated to exploring Amboseli’s five distinct ecosystems on morning and afternoon game drives. Begin at dawn when elephant families gather at the central swamps — hundreds strong, calves playing in the water, matriarchs leading their clans with ancient wisdom. The park hosts over 1,600 elephants, including some of the last great big tuskers whose ivory sweeps the ground as they walk.
Ascend Observation Hill — one of Amboseli’s few walking viewpoints — where panoramic views reveal the entire park spread below: swamps glittering in the sun, elephant herds crossing the plains, Kilimanjaro standing guard to the south. Track lions, cheetahs, buffalo, wildebeest, zebras, and giraffes across open grasslands where visibility stretches to the horizon.
Around 5pm, witness Amboseli’s most extraordinary spectacle — the evening elephant migration from the swamps to Kilimanjaro’s forests. Hundreds of elephants cross the road before you, tusks catching the golden light, the mountain glowing behind them. Optional Maasai village visit available.
Day 5: Amboseli – Lake Nakuru National Park | Into the Great Rift Valley
After a final early morning game drive and breakfast with Kilimanjaro views, depart Amboseli and drive northwest toward Lake Nakuru National Park in the Great Rift Valley — one of Earth’s most dramatic geological features. The approximately 6-hour journey passes through Nairobi and descends into the valley floor, where views stretch for miles.
Arrive at Lake Nakuru in time for lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive in this compact but extraordinarily wildlife-rich park. Lake Nakuru is famous for its flamingo spectacle — when present, millions of lesser and greater flamingos create a shimmering pink ribbon along the alkaline lake shores. The park is also one of Kenya’s premier rhino sanctuaries, protecting both endangered black rhinos and white rhinos.
Track Rothschild giraffes — taller and paler than their Masai cousins — alongside buffalo, waterbuck, and if fortunate, the rare tree-climbing lions in the fever tree forests. Over 400 bird species make this a birder’s paradise. Return to your lodge as the sun sets over the Rift Valley escarpment.
Day 6: Lake Nakuru – Masai Mara National Reserve | Gateway to Africa's Greatest Show
After breakfast, journey west from Lake Nakuru toward Kenya’s crown jewel — the legendary Masai Mara National Reserve. The approximately 5-hour drive passes through the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment, small farming towns, and vast Maasai pastoralist lands where red-robed warriors tend their cattle.
Arrive at the Mara in time for lunch at your camp, then head straight out for your first game drive in Africa’s most famous wildlife reserve. The vast savannah teems with life — massive elephant herds, towering giraffes, thousands of zebras and wildebeest, and the predators that follow: lion prides, solitary cheetahs, and elusive leopards. Visit the Mara River, famous for the Great Migration’s dramatic crossings (July-October).
The Mara’s extensive road network allows close-range encounters perfect for photography. As the sun descends toward the horizon, the golden light transforms the plains into something extraordinary — the Africa of every dream, finally real. Return to camp for dinner under infinite stars.
Day 7: Masai Mara National Reserve | Full-Day Big Five Safari
Rise before dawn for the Mara’s most magical hour — when predators return from night hunts and the soft morning light illuminates golden grasslands. The Mara hosts over 95 mammal species, including all the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the endangered black rhino (though rhinos are rare here). Cheetahs survey the plains from termite mounds. Leopards descend from trees where they’ve cached kills overnight.
Continue game viewing through late morning, then enjoy a picnic breakfast in the bush before returning to camp for lunch and relaxation during the heat of the day. Your afternoon game drive offers different wildlife behavior — elephants gathering at waterholes, hyena clans emerging from dens, and if extraordinarily fortunate, predator kills or the rare black rhino.
If visiting between July and October, you may witness the Great Migration, over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras thunder across the Mara River in a churning spectacle of raw survival. Over 570 bird species add constant color and movement to the landscape. Optional hot air balloon safari at dawn (additional cost).
Day 8: Masai Mara National Reserve | Second Full Day
Another full day in the Mara ensures maximum wildlife encounters and multiple chances for that perfect photograph. Your guide knows every lion pride territory, every leopard hotspot, every cheetah coalition’s favorite hunting ground; this local expertise dramatically increases your chances of extraordinary sightings.
Morning and afternoon game drives can be customized to your interests, focus on big cats, track elephant families, pursue bird photography, or simply explore the Mara’s vast grasslands and acacia woodlands at your own pace. The reserve’s 1,510 square kilometers mean you can spend days here and still discover new corners, new animals, new moments that stop your heart.
Optional activities include a visit to a traditional Maasai village to learn about warrior culture, beadwork, and the pastoralist lifestyle that has coexisted with wildlife for centuries. Return to camp each evening for fireside stories, sundowners on the plains, and the sounds of the African night, hyenas calling, nightjars singing, lions roaring somewhere in the darkness.
Day 9: Masai Mara – Nairobi | Farewell to the Wild
Rise early for a final dawn game drive, your last chance to spot that elusive leopard, witness a lion kill, or simply watch the Mara wake up in golden light one more time. Return to camp for a hearty breakfast as the sun climbs higher and the day’s warmth settles over the savannah.
Check out and begin the scenic 5-6 hour drive back to Nairobi, carrying nine days of memories, thousands of photographs, and a quiet wildness that has settled somewhere behind your eyes. The Great Rift Valley unfolds one last time through the windows, a farewell panorama from one of Earth’s most dramatic landscapes.
Arrive in Nairobi by early afternoon with drop-off at your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward journey. The wild has marked you. You’ll be back.
