Safari Overview
Some safaris chase the obvious. This one shows you Kenya beyond the postcards.
This 5-day Kenya classic safari takes you through the country’s central highlands and the Great Rift Valley on a route that reveals Kenya’s extraordinary diversity — from the misty, mountain forests of Aberdare where elephants emerge from the mist like ghosts, to Lake Nakuru’s flamingo-painted shores in the ancient Rift Valley, to the legendary golden plains of the Masai Mara where the greatest wildlife drama on Earth unfolds daily.
This is the Aberdare safari experience combined with Kenya’s most iconic reserves — a journey that moves from cool, forested highlands at 3,000 meters above sea level down through the dramatic Rift Valley to the endless savannah grasslands of the Mara. Each destination offers something completely different: Aberdare’s rare forest elephants, giant forest hogs, and elusive bongo antelopes; Lake Nakuru’s rhino sanctuary and millions of flamingos; and the Masai Mara’s unrivaled Big Five concentrations and seasonal Great Migration spectacle.
This Rift Valley safari Kenya route has been refined over decades — it’s the classic for a reason. You’ll experience maximum wildlife diversity, stunning landscape contrasts, and authentic Kenya, all within five perfectly paced days.

Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi – Aberdare National Park | Into the Misty Mountain Wilderness
Your journey begins with a morning departure from Nairobi, driving north through Kenya’s lush Central Highlands, a landscape of coffee plantations, tea estates, and small farming communities. The road climbs steadily into the mountains, and the temperature drops as you ascend toward Aberdare National Park.
Arrive at Aberdare Country Club for lunch, then transfer to your unique tree lodge, either The Ark or Treetops, perched above a floodlit waterhole and salt lick. This is safari unlike anything else in Kenya: watch wildlife from heated viewing decks as elephants, buffalo, giant forest hogs, and if extraordinarily fortunate, the rare bongo antelope emerge from the forest to drink. The mountain scenery is spectacular — misty bamboo forests, cascading waterfalls, and peaks reaching 4,000 meters create a hauntingly beautiful wilderness that feels worlds away from the savannah.
Accommodation: The Ark or Treetops Lodge (tree lodge) | Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Highlights: Central Highlands drive · Unique tree lodge experience · Floodlit waterhole wildlife viewing · Mountain forest atmosphere
Day 2: Aberdare – Lake Nakuru National Park | Descent into the Great Rift Valley
After breakfast with mountain views, descend from the highlands toward Lake Nakuru National Park in the Great Rift Valley. The approximately 4-hour journey passes through scenic farming country and offers your first views of the Rift Valley escarpment — one of Earth’s most dramatic geological features.
Arrive at Lake Nakuru for lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive in this compact but extraordinarily wildlife-rich park. Lake Nakuru is world-famous for its flamingo spectacle — when conditions are right, millions paint the alkaline shores pink. This is also one of Kenya’s premier rhino sanctuaries, protecting both black and white rhinos, with some of the best rhino-viewing opportunities in East Africa. Look for rare Rothschild giraffes, tree-climbing lions in the fever forests, and over 400 bird species including pelicans, cormorants, and African fish eagles.
Accommodation: Mid-range lodge | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Highlights: Rift Valley descent · Flamingo spectacle · Rhino sanctuary · Rothschild giraffes · Tree-climbing lions
Day 3: Lake Nakuru – Masai Mara National Reserve | Journey to Africa's Greatest Wildlife Theater
After breakfast, depart Lake Nakuru and drive southwest toward the legendary Masai Mara. The approximately 5-hour journey passes through the dramatic Rift Valley landscapes, small towns, and vast Maasai pastoralist lands where warriors in red shukas tend their cattle beneath endless skies.
Arrive at Enkorok Mara Camp in time for lunch. This intimate tented camp offers an authentic Mara experience with modern comfort. After settling in, head out for your first afternoon game drive in Africa’s most celebrated wildlife reserve. The Mara delivers immediately: herds of wildebeest and zebra stretching to the horizon, giraffes browsing acacia tops, elephant families, and the predators — lions, cheetahs, leopards — that make this reserve legendary.
Accommodation: Enkorok Mara Camp (tented camp) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Highlights: Rift Valley scenic drive · Enkorok Mara Camp arrival · First Mara game viewing · Predator encounters
Day 4: Masai Mara National Reserve | Full-Day Wildlife Immersion
A full day dedicated to exploring the Masai Mara — and this is where the magic happens. Rise before dawn when predators are most active and the soft morning light transforms the savannah into pure gold. Track all the Big Five: massive lion prides, elusive leopards, elephant herds, Cape buffalo, and rare black rhinos.
The Mara hosts over 95 mammal species and 570 bird species. If visiting July-October, you may witness the Great Migration — over 1.5 million wildebeest crossing the crocodile-infested Mara River in one of nature’s most dramatic spectacles. Even outside migration season, the Mara’s resident populations deliver extraordinary encounters. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush, then continue game viewing through the afternoon golden hour when animals gather at waterholes and the light becomes magical for photography.
Accommodation: Enkorok Mara Camp | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Highlights: Dawn predator drive · Big Five tracking · Great Migration crossings (Jul-Oct) · Bush picnic lunch · Full-day game viewing
Day 5: Masai Mara – Nairobi | Farewell to the Wild
Rise early for a final dawn game drive — your last chance to spot that elusive leopard or witness the Mara waking in golden light. Return to camp for breakfast, check out, and begin the scenic 5-6 hour drive back to Nairobi with game viewing en route as you exit the reserve.
Arrive in Nairobi by early afternoon for drop-off at your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. You came seeking classic Kenya. You found something that goes deeper than any photograph could capture.
Accommodation: No accommodation (end of tour) | Meals: Breakfast
Highlights: Final dawn game drive · Scenic return through Rift Valley · Nairobi arrival
