This itinerary suits travellers who want a complete Tanzania experience, the northern circuit's headline wildlife followed by genuine beach time to decompress, rather than trying to fit both into separate trips. The safari portion of this journey is at its best during the June to October dry season, with January to March adding calving season interest in the wider region. Zanzibar's own weather calendar runs slightly differently, driest from June to October and again from December to March, with April to May bringing the heaviest rains to the island. Travellers with flexible dates should aim for June to October, when both halves of this itinerary align well.
You land at Kilimanjaro International Airport, and if the sky is clear, Kilimanjaro itself might greet you through the window, its snowcapped summit rising above the clouds. Your first Tanzania national park is already extraordinary. Tarangire is beloved by guides for good reason, vast, remote in its southern reaches, and utterly alive. Ancient baobab trees, Africa’s prehistoric trees of life, punctuate the dry woodland in every direction, while enormous elephant herds move between the river and the shade. Wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, impala, buffalo, and the rarely seen gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx all share this landscape. A picnic lunch in the bush is followed by the drive on to your camp as the sun drops.
The Serengeti. Even saying it feels like an arrival. The drive in winds through the Maasai highlands before the land opens wide and the horizon becomes everything. Two full days here mean time to breathe, to search, to simply be present in one of the greatest wildlife arenas on the planet. The Serengeti wildebeest migration is the great spectacle, more than a million wildebeest, hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle moving in ancient rhythm across the plains, pursued by lion, cheetah and crocodile. In the southern grasslands, rock kopjes rise from the grass like fortresses, favoured vantage points for the big cats that rule here.
Your private guide knows how to read the land, and this second full day builds on everything the first revealed, further sightings you’ll find yourself describing to people for years. For a different perspective entirely, a sunrise hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti plains is available at additional cost, drifting silently above the herds as morning light floods the savannah, ask us to arrange it if this appeals.
The drive from the Serengeti to Ngorongoro takes you through shifting landscapes until, suddenly, the crater rim appears and the world drops away below. Nearly 600 metres deep and 20 kilometres wide, the Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed volcano that became its own kingdom. The highest concentration of wildlife in Africa lives within these walls, elephant, lion, buffalo, hippo and the rare black rhino, and this is one of the most reliable places on the continent to see all of the Big Five in a single game drive. Six hours in the crater, a picnic lunch on its floor, and a return to Karatu as the afternoon softens bring the wildlife portion of your journey to a close.
After a final safari breakfast, you’ll transfer via Arusha or Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar, the island air and the change in pace noticeable within minutes of touching down. Your driver meets you and transfers you to your beach accommodation, where the rest of the day is yours to settle in, dip your feet in the Indian Ocean, and let five full days of safari properly sink in before switching entirely into beach mode.
A guided tour of Stone Town, Zanzibar’s UNESCO World Heritage old quarter, introduces you to centuries of Swahili, Arab, Indian and European influence woven into its narrow streets and carved wooden doors. In the afternoon, a visit to a working spice farm brings Zanzibar’s history as the Spice Island to life, with cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and vanilla identified by scent and taste along the way.
Today is entirely unstructured; the beach, the ocean and your own pace are the only agenda. Snorkelling excursions to Mnemba Atoll’s coral reefs are easily arranged for anyone who wants to get in the water, while others may prefer to do nothing more ambitious than move between a lounger and the sea.
A morning visit to Jozani Forest, home to the rare and endemic red colobus monkey, offers a different kind of wildlife encounter from the safari days behind you. The afternoon returns to leisure, before an evening dhow cruise along the coastline, sails catching the last light as the sun drops into the Indian Ocean.
Your final full day on Zanzibar is left deliberately open, a last swim, a last walk along the beach, or simply time to sit with everything the past nine days have shown you before the journey home begins tomorrow.
After a final breakfast, your transfer to Zanzibar International Airport closes this chapter. Tanzania has a way of staying with you, in the smell of dust after rain, in the sound of a lion at dusk, in the quiet of an ocean morning.
