Safari Overview
This 7-day Kenya safari isn’t the standard Masai Mara circuit—it’s the complete Kenya wildlife experience that reveals what 90% of travellers never see. Four completely different ecosystems: the misty montane forests of Aberdare National Park, where elephants emerge from bamboo groves, the arid northern wilderness of Samburu with species found nowhere else on Earth, the flamingo-painted alkaline shores of Lake Nakuru’s rhino sanctuary, and three full nights in the legendary Masai Mara where the Great Migration crosses crocodile-infested rivers (July-October).
This Kenya safari tour delivers an extraordinary variety that most safaris can’t match. In Aberdare’s cloud forests at 10,000 feet elevation, watch elephants and buffalo visit floodlit waterholes from your lodge balcony. In Samburu’s dramatic landscapes bisected by the Ewaso Nyiro River, track the “Samburu Special Five”—reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx, and gerenuk (long-necked antelope). These rare northern species exist only in this arid region and nowhere else in Kenya.
This Samburu Masai Mara safari combination showcases Kenya’s full spectrum: from northern semi-desert to montane forest to Rift Valley lakes to endless savannah plains. It’s the safari for travellers who want the iconic Mara experience plus Kenya’s hidden gems—different landscapes, different wildlife, different adventures every single day. Seven days exploring four premier parks means you’ll encounter more species diversity than any standard Kenya safari delivers.
Fully customizable: add extra nights anywhere, upgrade accommodations, mix lodge categories, swap Aberdare for Ol Pejeta Conservancy—this safari adapts to your vision.

Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi – Aberdare National Park | Into the Misty Mountain Forests
Your comprehensive Kenya safari tour begins with morning pickup from Nairobi. Drive approximately 3 hours north through Kenya’s fertile highlands—coffee and tea plantations clinging to hillsides, rural villages, changing landscapes as elevation climbs. Aberdare National Park sits at 7,000-13,000 feet in the central highlands, its misty bamboo forests and moorlands creating an ecosystem completely unlike anything you’ll see later.
Arrive at your lodge (typically The Ark or Aberdare Country Club) for lunch. Aberdare’s unique safari experience unfolds from your lodge balcony overlooking floodlit waterholes and salt licks—no game drives needed. As afternoon turns to evening, watch elephants, buffalo, bongo antelope, giant forest hogs, and bushbuck emerge from the forest to drink and feed. Some lucky visitors spot leopards or rare bongo (Africa’s largest forest antelope with striking white stripes). Aberdare’s cloud forest atmosphere, cool temperatures, and wildlife viewing from comfort make this a completely different start to your safari adventure.
Accommodation: Mountain lodge | Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Highlights: Montane forest ecosystem · Waterhole viewing from lodge · Elephants emerging from bamboo · Rare bongo antelope
Day 2: Aberdare – Samburu National Reserve | Northern Kenya's Arid Wilderness
After breakfast watching dawn wildlife at the waterhole, and depart for Samburu National Reserve, approximately 5 hours north, crossing the equator and descending into the arid northern region. The landscape transforms dramatically: from misty forests to rugged semi-desert terrain with scattered acacia trees and the life-giving Ewaso Nyiro River cutting through red earth.
Arrive at your Samburu lodge/camp for lunch with views toward the dramatic Ol Olokwe mountain backdrop. Afternoon game drive introduces you to the “Samburu Special Five”—species adapted to this harsh environment found nowhere else in Kenya. Track reticulated giraffes (taller, paler, more defined patterns than Masai giraffes), Grevy’s zebras (larger ears, narrower stripes than plains zebras), Somali ostriches (blue-legged beauties), Beisa oryx (straight-horned antelope), and gerenuk (gazelles that stand on hind legs to browse acacia). Beyond the Special Five, Samburu hosts healthy elephant populations, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and over 450 bird species. The riverine forests along Ewaso Nyiro create dramatic contrast against arid surroundings. This Samburu Masai Mara safari showcases Kenya’s ecological diversity—from northern semi-desert to southern savannah grasslands.
Accommodation: Samburu lodge/tented camp | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Highlights: Samburu Special Five · Reticulated giraffes · Grevy’s zebras · Ewaso Nyiro River · Northern Kenya landscapes
Day 3: Samburu – Lake Nakuru National Park | Great Rift Valley's Flamingo Sanctuary
Early morning Samburu game drive catches wildlife at their most active—predators returning from night hunts, elephants heading to the river, gerenuk browsing in the cool dawn. Return for breakfast, then depart for Lake Nakuru—approximately 5-6 hours south through changing terrain back across the equator, descending into the Great Rift Valley.
Arrive at Lake Nakuru for lunch and afternoon game drive around this compact, wildlife-rich park. Lake Nakuru is world-famous for its flamingo spectacle—when conditions are right, millions of lesser and greater flamingos create a shimmering pink ribbon along alkaline shores (though numbers fluctuate based on water levels). Beyond flamingos, Nakuru is one of Kenya’s premier rhino sanctuaries, protecting both critically endangered black rhinos and white rhinos within an electric fence. Track both species across the park alongside rare Rothschild giraffes, lions, leopards, buffalo, waterbuck, and if fortunate, the famous tree-climbing lions. Over 400 bird species including pelicans, cormorants, and African fish eagles make this a birder’s paradise. The 7 day Kenya safari routing from Samburu’s arid north to Nakuru’s Rift Valley creates maximum landscape and wildlife contrast.
Accommodation: Lake Nakuru lodge | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Highlights: Flamingo spectacle · Black & white rhino sanctuary · Rothschild giraffes · Tree-climbing lions · 400+ bird species
Day 4: Lake Nakuru – Masai Mara National Reserve | Into Africa's Greatest Wildlife Theater
After breakfast and optional morning Nakuru game drive, depart for the legendary Masai Mara—approximately 5 hours traveling through the Rift Valley and across Maasai pastoralist lands where red-robed warriors tend their cattle. Arrive at your Mara lodge/tented camp for lunch, settle into canvas elegance or lodge comfort, then head straight out for your first afternoon game drive.
The Mara delivers immediately: this 1,510 km² ecosystem hosts Kenya’s highest wildlife concentrations. Massive elephant herds, lions lounging in acacia shade, cheetahs perched on termite mounds scanning for prey, giraffes browsing treetops, wildebeest and zebra stretching to every horizon, and the Mara River where Nile crocodiles lurk year-round. If visiting July-October, position yourself for the Great Migration—over 1.5 million wildebeest massing before plunging into crocodile-infested waters in churning survival drama. The Mara’s vast savannah plains, incredible big cat densities, and seasonal migration spectacle justify spending three full nights here. Return to camp as African sunset paints the plains copper and rose.
Accommodation: Masai Mara lodge/tented camp | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Highlights: Masai Mara arrival · First Big Five game drive · Mara River · Great Migration staging (Jul-Oct)
Day 5-6: Masai Mara Full Days | Big Five & Migration Immersion
Two full days exploring Africa’s most famous reserve. Rise before dawn for early morning drives when predators are most active—lions returning from night hunts, leopards descending from trees, cheetahs stalking Thomson’s gazelles. The Mara hosts all Big Five with exceptional viewing: lions (huge prides lounging on kopjes), leopards (frequently spotted in fig trees), elephants (massive family groups), buffalo (thousands strong), and rare black rhinos (elusive but present).
Spend full days on game drives with picnic lunches at hippo pools where hundreds wallow and yawn while crocodiles bask on banks. If visiting migration season, witness Mara River crossings—wildebeest plunging into churning waters, crocodiles launching attacks, dramatic survival spectacle. Even outside migration, the Mara’s resident populations deliver extraordinary encounters. Optional activities: hot air balloon safari at dawn ($450-500pp) floating silently over the plains followed by champagne breakfast, or Maasai village visit ($25-30pp) learning about warrior culture and beadwork traditions. The Samburu Masai Mara safari contrast is striking—Samburu’s rare northern species versus Mara’s abundant plains game and big cats.
Accommodation: Enkakenya – Mara’s Hidden Gem| Meals: All meals
Highlights: Big Five tracking · Great Migration crossings (Jul-Oct) · Optional balloon safari · Maasai cultural visits · Hippo pools
Day 7: Masai Mara – Nairobi | Farewell to the Wild
Final early morning game drive—your last chance to spot that elusive leopard or witness the Mara waking in golden light. Return for breakfast, check out, and begin the scenic 5-6 hour drive back to Nairobi with game viewing en route as you exit the reserve. Stop at Great Rift Valley viewpoint one final time for photos.
Arrive Nairobi by early afternoon for drop-off at your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. You came seeking a 7 day Kenya safari. You found the complete Kenya experience: misty Aberdare forests, Samburu’s rare northern species, Nakuru’s flamingos and rhinos, and three unforgettable days in the legendary Masai Mara.
