Three days is all it takes to have one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife encounters, and this compact itinerary is built entirely around it: a single hour spent in the company of mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, followed by a genuinely restorative stay on Lake Bunyonyi.
The journey south from Entebbe is a destination in its own right, rolling hills, plantation landscape and a crossing of the equator along the way to the edge of the Virunga Massif. After a UWA briefing, your gorilla trek takes you into Bwindi’s forest ecosystem in search of a habituated family, an hour in their company before a tracking certificate marks the achievement. The afternoon carries you through terraced hillsides to Lake Bunyonyi, one of Uganda’s most beautiful settings, for an evening spent simply taking in the view before the return journey to Kampala, a coffee stop at Mbarara and a final photo opportunity at the equator along the way.
A short, privately guided safari for travellers who want the gorilla trekking experience without building an entire circuit around it.
This itinerary suits travellers with limited time who want the gorilla trekking experience specifically, without extending into a longer Uganda circuit. It’s especially well suited to those adding gorilla trekking onto a Rwanda or Tanzania trip, or as a focused, standalone bucket-list journey. The Lake Bunyonyi stay afterward offers genuine rest, a well-earned contrast to the physical effort of the trek itself.
This itinerary’s best value falls in April, May and November, when the gorilla permit drops from $800 to $600 per person, a meaningful saving that outweighs the slightly wetter conditions during those months. Bwindi’s rainforest trekking operates in every season, so travellers prioritising cost should consider these three months, while those prioritising drier trail conditions may prefer June to September or December to February instead.
Today you’ll depart from Entebbe for the drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda. The journey itself is genuinely enjoyable, rolling hills and plantation landscape all the way to the edge of the Virunga Massif, with a crossing of the equator along the way. Keep your camera close; there are plenty of moments worth capturing.
After an early breakfast, you’ll drive to the Uganda Wildlife Authority headquarters for your briefing before setting out on the gorilla trekking adventure itself. Tracking through Bwindi’s forest ecosystem is an experience in its own right, and once your group locates the gorillas, you’ll spend a full hour observing their behaviour and taking photographs, before returning to headquarters for your tracking certificate. In the afternoon, the drive continues through terraced hillsides to Lake Bunyonyi, where you’ll check into your accommodation for a relaxed evening, a stunning view of the lake included.
A relaxed breakfast on the lodge terrace, taking in views of Lake Bunyonyi’s scattered islands, sets a gentle tone for the day ahead. With a proper breath of the lake and hills behind you, you’ll begin the return journey toward Kampala, with a stopover at Mbarara town for lunch and a cup of homemade organic coffee. A further stop at the Uganda equator offers a final round of photographs and souvenir shopping, before continuing on to Kampala, arriving in the late afternoon or evening to be dropped at your hotel, the airport, or wherever your journey takes you next.
